In November, we held an ‘International Alumni Careers’ panel for international students seeking to find graduate jobs and to pursue careers in the UK.
We caught up with our five panellists to hear their top tips:
Anukriti Panda, MSc Public Health
Anukriti came to study at the University of Bristol from India and is now a Senior Clinical Research Practitioner at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London. Her advice to international students trying to find work in the UK is:
“Firstly, networking! Network with your friends, with your academic advisors, and most importantly with your alumni. We are all available on LinkedIn, just connect with us and then we can share our email addresses.”
Hi, I’m Yueqi. In the final year of my postgraduate studying Marketing (Msc), I luckily found an SME Internship as a Marketing Intern for New Silk Route.
My internship included writing content on social media platforms, such as writing posts to attract customers to enquire about the company’s services and close deals.
Most of the time I worked remotely but I still needed to meet with customers to fulfill their desires and offer appropriate services.
The SME Internship Scheme enables you to gain quality, paid work experience from small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, including charities, social enterprises and start-ups.
Mengying’s internship ran with funding from Bristol Innovations, here’s what she had to say about her experience:
Hi, I’m Mengying, a current postgraduate student studying Management (International Human Resource Management).
I have just completed a Sales Internship with NuNano Ltd through the SME Internship Scheme, from January to April this year.
NuNano is a company specialising in the design and manufacture of probes for atomic force microscopy and cantilever-based sensor devices.
IVAS is a newly formed not-for-profit and independent organisation that promotes collaboration and cultural exchanges between universities and international artists and scholars.
Although this role does not correspond directly to the majors I have studied, I have gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge through practice.
‘First and foremost, I would like to thank my manager and mentor, Minyan‘
Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Tirenioluwa Omigbodun recently took on the challenge of an IKEEP placement with independent arts venue The Bristol Improv Theatre (BIT).
She was part of a student team looking at external factors impacting the theatre so they can adapt and attract new audiences.
Tirenioluwa, can you tell us about your team placement with Bristol Improv Theatre?
The placement with the Bristol Improv Theatre was on looking at their external environment. The theatre was preparing their 2023/25 business plan and needed a glimpse of the socio-economic environment. We researched their audience profiles, trends within the industry and how the BIT impacts its environment.
Hi, I’m Mehwish. I was given the opportunity to join Resilience Brokers as a Sustainability Projects Intern. Resilience Brokers helps organisations to use systems thinking to improve the climate resilience of places.
Climate resilience is the capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or shocks related to climate.
During my internship, I undertook five research tasks that revolved primarily around building resilient communities and communicating with stakeholders. These included:
In February, the Careers Service invited five international alumni to share their valuable insights and experiences with searching and applying for graduate roles in Asia.

When preparing for job applications and interviews, think about the different experiences you have at Bristol and use it as your unique selling point (USP).
Try to identify a range of competencies throughout your time at university that will make you stand out as a candidate. Remember, your extra-curricular experiences are just as important as your legal internship and work experiences!
